PREDICTION SEASON IS UPON US: ‘Tis the season of predictions as everyone tries to get a jump on 2020’s hottest trends. Here are 3 trends we’re excited about from Social Media Today’s 20 Predictions for Social Media Marketing in 2020

  1. Facebook to invest in virtual reality. Will it become the future of social media interaction?
  2. Twitter will be looking to add new options to limit the audience and usage of your tweets, enabling you to target your tweets to specific audiences
  3. LinkedIn recently launched its new events tool for people and brands to create new event pages on the platform. With new features expected in 2020, like the capacity to share live-streams from events on the event page, and the option to add separate pages for event sessions stemming from the main page, more marketers will likely leverage this channel.

Why you should care: As social media platforms introduce, tweak, and sunset old features, the content that enrollment marketers put out on these platforms will have to change. We all know video is the gold standard on social media, but virtual reality seems to be on its way, while other disruptions to traditional social media interactions abound!

SOME PEOPLE WANT TO WATCH VIDEOS OF NORMAL PEOPLE DOING NORMAL THINGS: While social influencers can accumulate millions of shares and likes, don’t underestimate the power of normal people influencing the masses. Brands leveraging “with me” videos to empower people to act (motivation to clean, finish that study session, or even cut the grass) are extremely powerful. Many “with me” videos that seem commonplace actually have millions of views. Why? Seeing normal people (rather than seasoned pros) master a task, explore a new product, or try something new inspires ordinary viewers to act, try, or buy.

Why you should care: Highlighting the uber-successful student’s research and breaking news about your school is great for awareness, but videos about the day-to-day, common life of students is just as important. Showing student life videos or even sponsoring a current student to do a “day-in-the-life” video series around campus can help empower prospective students to make informed decisions about where to apply and enroll.

IMPROVE SEO AND PRODUCE MORE CONTENT WITH GUEST BLOGGING: Guest blogging is a “barter deal” where you write a valuable piece of content for someone else’s blog while also maintaining credit as the author. Some businesses need content, while others need traffic and backlinks to bolster SEO rankings. Guest blogging provides that medium of exchange for mutual benefit for content writer and blog-hoster.

Why you should care: Whether you’re a higher ed marketer searching for backlink opportunities or want to improve the regularity of blogging in 2020 (but you just don’t have the time), guest blogging can be a great solution for either case. If done right, you can spread awareness about your blog, acquire natural backlinks from quality websites, and improve SEO without cutting into your budget.
