Dave Martel

David W. Martel is Vice President for Communications and Chief Marketing Officer at the University of Virginia. Appointed in 2013, he leads the University’s integrated communications and marketing strategy, advancing UVA’s reputation and amplifying awareness of its academic excellence, research impact, and public service mission. His portfolio includes brand and marketing strategy, issues management, leadership communications, content and story strategy, creative development, digital engagement, collegiate licensing, and media relations. A direct report to the president, Martel serves as UVA’s lead communicator, shaping institutional narrative and guiding enterprise-wide efforts to highlight the University’s academic rigor, world-class research, vibrant student experience, athletic success, and contributions to the Commonwealth and beyond. During his tenure, Martel has led a comprehensive reorganization of University Communications, building high-performing teams and spearheading several multi-year strategic plans that strengthened alignment, impact, and execution across the institution. He serves on the UVA Wise College Foundation Board and provides pro bono counsel to higher education leaders on communications, brand strategy, and organizational change. In 2021, he received the Crockett Award for significant contributions to strengthening the relationship between UVA and UVA Wise. Prior to joining UVA, Martel held senior leadership roles at the University of Connecticut and the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research. His background in public opinion research and cultural analysis continues to inform a data-driven approach to communications strategy and organizational performance. Martel and his wife, Kristen, live in Stony Point; they have five adult children.
