About the Episode:

In this episode recorded live from Transact 360, Dustin sits down with Mike Maxsenti, SVP of Product at Genea, to explore how higher ed is embracing digital transformation—specifically in the world of campus security. They unpack how mobile credentials, cloud-based access systems, and IoT sensors are changing what it means to create a safe, smart, and student-friendly campus.

From eliminating tailgating to managing dynamic commuter access, this conversation goes beyond buzzwords and surfaces actionable ideas for campus leaders ready to upgrade their infrastructure and student experience.

How is digital transformation impacting campus security in higher education?

Digital transformation in higher ed is no longer just about payments or scheduling—it’s about creating a unified digital experience that stretches into the physical campus. As Mike Maxsenti shares, students now expect to use their smartphones to open dorm doors, check into the library, or swipe into dining halls, all with the same ease they pay for coffee. Genia, in partnership with Transact, is helping institutions turn that vision into reality by integrating digital credentials into access control systems.

This shift isn’t just for convenience—it’s also a major security upgrade. Traditional ID cards are easy to lose or share, but mobile credentials are more secure and reduce tailgating. Plus, for administrators, moving access control into the cloud means one less server to patch, maintain, and protect. It's a digital upgrade that benefits both the student experience and IT efficiency.

What does balancing security and convenience really look like?

Maxsenti tackles the classic trade-off between user-friendliness and robust security by flipping the script. Genia's goal is to eliminate that tension entirely. Mobile credentials don’t just make things easier—they actively improve security by ensuring that access can’t be socially shared, like a physical ID card might be. For students, it’s simple: if they’ve got their phone, they’ve got access. For administrators, that means real-time verification and more accurate control over who’s allowed where.

But it’s not just about swiping in. Maxsenti emphasizes the emotional layer of security—when students feel safe, they perform better. Parents notice this too, especially on campus tours. Turnstiles, wireless door locks, and frictionless entry systems may seem like small upgrades, but they communicate a bigger message: this institution is investing in your safety.

What’s next for campus safety technology?

While mobile credentials and cloud-based systems are becoming table stakes, Maxsenti hints at the next big wave: proactive, sensor-based security. Genia is rolling out IoT technology for gunshot detection and crowd monitoring—offering real-time alerts to campus safety teams. These “beyond the door” features represent a bold new phase where safety is not just about access but about incident prevention and rapid response.

Another exciting development is dynamic space management. With the rise of commuter and hybrid students, institutions are rethinking how physical space is reserved and used. Genia is building tools that let students book rooms, desks, or lab access on demand—directly through an app. This kind of real-time access control ensures resources are used efficiently and securely, and that access rights are tailored to the student’s real-time needs.
