Episode Summary: FAQs Answered

What is the current state of workforce development in higher ed?

Workforce development has traditionally been a focus of community colleges, but public and private four-year institutions are starting to play a more active role. As enrollment pressures grow and industries face talent shortages, colleges are realizing the importance of forming strategic partnerships to develop talent pipelines and reskill employees.

How can higher ed and industry better collaborate?

Institutions and industry need to focus on building long-term, mutually beneficial relationships. This includes co-creating programs, developing internships, supporting dual enrollment, and making training and education more accessible to employees. Partnerships should prioritize shared goals, like addressing skill gaps and ensuring economic mobility.

What role do career centers play in workforce development?

Career centers are critical to building bridges between students and industry. They can facilitate internships, externships, and experiential learning opportunities that prepare students for in-demand roles. However, they are often underfunded and understaffed, limiting their potential. Institutions should invest in career services to better support students and employers alike.

Why are certificates and microcredentials so important?

Certificates and microcredentials allow students to quickly gain marketable skills without committing to a four-year degree. These programs are often stackable, meaning they can lead to further education and career advancement. They are especially valuable in fields like healthcare, technology, and advanced manufacturing.

What are the benefits of investing in upskilling and reskilling employees?

For companies, upskilling and reskilling employees improves retention, loyalty, and overall satisfaction. For higher ed, partnering with employers to provide corporate training creates new revenue streams and strengthens ties to the community. Employees gain valuable credentials that support career and economic mobility.

The Future of Workforce Development

1. Breaking Down Silos

To fully leverage the potential of workforce partnerships, higher ed institutions need to stop operating in isolation. Partnerships with industry must be embedded into institutional strategy and seen as essential to fulfilling their mission.

2. Career Centers of the Future

Colleges must reimagine their career services offices, investing in resources and staff to foster stronger connections with industry. This includes leveraging technology like virtual reality and augmented reality to expose students to career options earlier in their educational journey.

3. Expanding Access to Lifelong Learning

Workforce development isn’t just about students—it’s about supporting employees throughout their careers. Higher ed can partner with industry to create accessible pathways for continuous learning, from certifications to advanced degrees.

Why Partnerships Matter

Eds and Meds: A Case for Collaboration

As Geoffrey Roche emphasizes, educational institutions and healthcare systems (eds and meds) are often the largest employers in a region. By joining forces, these anchor institutions can drive economic growth, address workforce shortages, and improve the quality of life in their communities.

Student Success as the North Star

Ultimately, workforce partnerships should prioritize the student experience. Clear pathways from education to employment benefit not only students but also institutions and employers. Investments in career services, innovative program design, and flexible credentialing are all steps toward this goal.

Final Thoughts

Geoffrey Roche leaves us with a compelling reminder: "When education and industry come together, we can truly transform not only institutions but entire communities. Eds and meds have the power to improve economic vitality, create career mobility, and solve some of the biggest challenges facing our nation."
