Becca Altimier on Embracing Failure [Lessons in Leadership]

Or listen on:

About the Episode

Carrie sits down with Becca Altimier to discuss one of the most challenging aspects of leadership: giving difficult feedback. Becca shares her personal journey in learning how to approach these tough conversations, emphasizing the growth that comes from leaning into uncomfortable moments. This insightful conversation offers valuable lessons for leaders on the importance of open communication and honest feedback to foster personal and organizational growth.

Key Takeaways:

  • Giving difficult feedback is crucial for both individual and organizational success.
  • Avoiding tough conversations can result in missed opportunities for growth and development.
  • Authentic leadership requires transparency and a willingness to engage in uncomfortable yet necessary dialogues.

Why is giving difficult feedback important for leaders?
Becca explained that while giving tough feedback is uncomfortable, it is necessary for growth. Leaders have a responsibility to their team to provide feedback that helps them develop, even if it’s hard to hear. By avoiding these conversations, Becca acknowledged that she did a disservice to her staff, as they missed opportunities for improvement. Similarly, the organization missed the chance to elevate its performance because team members were not given the chance to correct or adjust behaviors. Leaders must understand that giving feedback is a form of support and commitment to the growth of the people they lead.

How can leaders balance authenticity and transparency when giving feedback?
Carrie agreed with Becca, noting that the true test of leadership lies in leaning into difficult conversations for the benefit of the individual and the organization. Authenticity in leadership means being transparent and honest, even when it’s hard. As both Carrie and Becca highlighted, the best way to serve a team is through clear communication and by addressing issues head-on. Leaders can cultivate a culture of trust and openness by consistently providing feedback that is aimed at development rather than criticism, allowing for continuous growth within the team.
