Episode Summary

What’s Next for Graduate Education?

Dr. Bertolino shares his perspective on the rapid changes in graduate education, emphasizing the growing importance of flexibility and technology. In a post-pandemic world, institutions like Stockton University are pivoting to accommodate evolving student expectations, especially through hybrid and online learning models. Graduate programs, particularly in health sciences, are expanding to address societal needs, including an aging population and increased demand for healthcare professionals.

Challenges in Integrating Technology

One major hurdle is the cost and complexity of integrating advanced technologies like virtual labs and clinical simulations. These tools are critical for fields like nursing and occupational therapy but require significant investment in infrastructure and faculty training. Dr. Bertolino highlights the importance of not only equipping students with these skills but also preparing faculty to leverage these tools effectively.

Defining Nontraditional Education

The pandemic accelerated the shift to virtual platforms, normalizing what was once considered nontraditional education. Dr. Bertolino argues that the distinction between traditional and nontraditional students is fading, replaced by a spectrum of learners with diverse needs. Programs must cater to a variety of subgroups, from veterans to working adults, using technology to build strong, supportive cohorts that foster collaboration and shared experiences.

Stockton’s Unique Approach to Instructional Technology

Stockton University’s Master of Arts in Instructional Technology exemplifies how institutions can prepare educators for modern challenges. By equipping K-12 and corporate educators with advanced tools, the program aims to bridge the gap between teaching and technology, ensuring better outcomes for students at all levels. This aligns with Stockton’s mission to meet regional needs while innovating for broader societal impact.

The Future of Graduate Education

Looking ahead, Dr. Bertolino identifies artificial intelligence as a game-changer for graduate education. While AI offers incredible potential for efficiency and personalization, institutions must teach students how to use it responsibly. He also stresses the enduring value of the humanities in fostering critical thinking and civic responsibility, calling for a balanced approach that integrates technology with core human values.
