Thom Chesney on Leading Through Uncertainty [Lessons in Leadership]

Or listen on:

About the Episode

Host Carrie welcomes Thom D. Chesney, a college president, to discuss leading through significant uncertainty. Thom shares insights from his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing adaptability, inclusivity, and transparency as critical strategies for navigating challenges. This episode offers actionable advice for leaders at all levels, from seasoned executives to rising professionals.

Key Takeaways

  • Adaptability is essential: Constantly assess who is missing from decision-making and adjust accordingly.
  • Promote inclusive planning: Ensure diverse voices—including students, staff, faculty, and community members—are represented in strategic discussions.
  • Foster a culture of transparency: Encourage collaborative planning and open communication for sustainable cultural change.

How can leaders ensure all voices are heard during uncertain times?

Thom stresses the importance of evaluating who is included in decision-making processes. Leaders should ask, "Whose voice isn't in the room?" to identify missing perspectives. Whether it’s students, staff, faculty, or external stakeholders, ensuring diverse representation leads to more informed and equitable decisions.

What strategies can leaders use to navigate institutional crises?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Thom’s team implemented a practice of regular roll calls to ensure transparency and inclusivity. This approach created a culture of shared responsibility and collaborative planning. By keeping everyone informed and engaged, leaders can guide their communities through uncertainty with clarity and purpose.

How can leaders create lasting cultural change?

Thom’s mantra, “Stay in each other’s business for all the right reasons,” reflects the value of cooperative and inclusive planning. This philosophy extended beyond crisis management, becoming a lens for strategic decision-making and transparency. Leaders who embrace this mindset can foster trust and collaboration, building a culture that thrives long after the crisis ends.
