Episode Summary: Courage, Collaboration, and Connection in Higher Ed Advancement

Why is collaboration more critical than ever in higher education?

Becca Altimer highlights collaboration as the central theme of her CASE Summit session and the broader conference experience. Presenting alongside peers from the University of Maryland and Lehigh University, Becca explored how marketing and advancement teams — whether centralized or decentralized — can achieve more together. The session illustrated how pooling resources and aligning on strategic priorities helps institutions meet growing expectations around fundraising, branding, and engagement. In today's higher ed landscape, collaboration isn't optional; it's mission-critical.

What role does emotion play in fundraising and enrollment marketing?

While data provides the foundation for outreach and targeting, Becca argues that emotional storytelling is what truly moves donors and prospective students to action. Fundraising, admissions, and advancement all benefit from human-centered narratives that convey purpose and impact. “We know who to reach out to and what they care about because of the data,” she explains, “but we really can make the ask and make that connection because of the stories that we tell.” It's a reminder to blend analytics with empathy in your campaigns.

How can institutions foster courage and hope amid uncertainty?

Throughout the episode, the hosts reflect on how the CASE Summit reinforced messages of hope and collective strength. Becca shares a memorable quote from Bill Treanor of Georgetown University Law Center: “These things take courage, but courage is contagious.” That idea of contagious courage — amplified through community and shared purpose — was a powerful undercurrent at the event. Especially in challenging times, being in conversation with peers helps professionals realize they are not alone and that real change is possible when they move forward together.
