Or listen on:

About the Episode

Carrie welcomes fellow leader Carrie Pitts-Densmore for an empowering discussion on overcoming gender barriers in the workplace. Both women share their experiences of being underestimated, navigating professional challenges, and standing up for themselves. Carrie Pitts-Densmore recounts a defining moment when she was told she could no longer speak in meetings—an encounter that led her to make a bold decision. This conversation is a must-listen for any woman who has faced skepticism in leadership and is looking for encouragement to own her voice and worth.

Key Takeaways

  • Women Leaders Are Often Underestimated – Many women, regardless of experience, have faced situations where their authority was questioned.
  • Standing Up for Yourself Matters – Carrie Pitts-Densmore’s story is a reminder that setting boundaries and advocating for yourself is crucial.
  • Know Your Worth – Even if you can’t walk away from a situation immediately, remember that you are talented, capable, and deserving of respect.
  • Leadership Can Drive Change – Women in leadership positions have the opportunity to challenge outdated norms and create inclusive workplaces.
  • Support Other Women – Encouraging and advocating for fellow women leaders helps break barriers and foster workplace equity.

How do women leaders navigate being underestimated?

Both Carrie and Carrie Pitts-Densmore share their experiences of walking into rooms where they were not taken as seriously as their male counterparts. Whether it was due to appearance, personality, or leadership style, they’ve both encountered skepticism despite their credentials. Their advice? Stay confident, keep delivering results, and never be afraid to speak up. Being underestimated can be frustrating, but it also provides an opportunity to prove doubters wrong.

When is it time to walk away from a toxic workplace?

Carrie Pitts-Densmore shares a pivotal career moment when, after a client meeting, she was told by company owners that she was no longer allowed to speak in meetings. Recognizing the gender bias at play, she immediately quit—knowing she would never be treated that way if she were a man. While not everyone is in a position to make such a bold move, her story underscores the importance of recognizing toxic work environments and having the confidence to walk away when possible.

How can women support each other in leadership?

Host Carrie emphasizes that while not every woman can immediately leave an unfair situation, every woman should recognize her worth. She encourages women to push forward with confidence and find allies in the workplace who uplift and advocate for them. She also highlights the role of female leaders in mentoring, supporting, and paving the way for the next generation of women in leadership.
