Kelly Ratliff on Handling Criticism [Lessons in Leadership]

About the Episode

In this discussion, Carrie and Kelly Ratliff explore how leaders can effectively manage feedback. Kelly recounts a pivotal moment early in her career when a 360-degree review taught her to balance the intent behind her actions with the impact they had on others. This episode is packed with practical advice on how to ask for feedback, act on it, and build stronger relationships in the workplace.

Episode Highlights

Why is Understanding Intent vs. Impact Important?

Kelly reflects on a moment during her graduate school experience when feedback revealed how her actions were unintentionally affecting others. This realization taught her to separate her intent from the impact her behavior might have. By focusing on how others perceive your actions, leaders can build stronger relationships and create more inclusive environments.

How Can Leaders Normalize Feedback?

Proactively asking for feedback, rather than waiting for it, makes receiving criticism less intimidating and more constructive. Kelly shares her favorite phrase, “Help me understand,” as a tool to seek clarity in a non-confrontational way. This approach encourages open dialogue and helps leaders refine their actions based on others’ perspectives.

Why is It Important to Embrace Positive Feedback?

Many leaders, particularly women, struggle to accept compliments without deflecting. Kelly reminds us that saying “thank you” is an important skill in leadership. Positive feedback is just as valuable as constructive criticism—it reinforces what’s working and builds confidence.
