About the Episode

Carrie sits down with Lisa Vasquez to discuss the often-overlooked yet crucial element of leadership—how you present yourself. Lisa shares a personal story about receiving unexpected advice on her wardrobe and how it transformed her confidence and professional presence. The conversation explores how leaders can apply marketing principles to themselves, ensuring that their tone, words, and appearance align with their brand. If you’re a woman in leadership looking for strategies to enhance your professional impact, this episode is packed with actionable insights.

Key Takeaways

  • You Are Your Own Brand – Apply marketing principles to how you present yourself, from tone and body language to wardrobe and confidence.
  • Perception Shapes Influence – People believe what they see and hear, making it essential to craft a strong and consistent professional presence.
  • Dressing for Leadership Matters – How you present yourself can change the way people perceive you, impacting how they treat you and how confidently you lead.
  • Be Creative and Authentic – As marketing professionals, it’s okay to let creativity shine in your presentation while still maintaining professionalism.
  • Effectiveness Over Fairness – Leaders are often held to a higher standard, and while that may not always feel fair, it’s essential to embrace it to be truly effective.

How does personal presentation impact leadership?

Lisa emphasizes that, as marketers, we understand that perception shapes reality. This principle applies not only to brand campaigns but also to our own professional presence. From the way we speak to the way we carry ourselves, every detail contributes to how others perceive our leadership. Lisa shares that when she became more intentional about her professional presentation, it not only changed how others treated her but also how she carried herself with confidence and authority.

What role does wardrobe play in leadership presence?

One of Lisa’s pivotal leadership lessons came when her boss pulled her aside and advised her to elevate her wardrobe after she was promoted to vice president. Initially surprised—especially since she had been wearing a company-branded shirt for Casual Friday—Lisa quickly realized that leadership often requires a different level of presentation. She learned that dressing the part shifted how people responded to her and reinforced her own confidence in her role. While it was a tough conversation to have, she now sees it as an invaluable lesson in professional branding.

Why is being effective more important than being right?

Carrie highlights a powerful insight: leaders often face unfair expectations, but the goal should be to focus on effectiveness rather than fairness. Lisa’s experience is a prime example—she could have resisted the feedback about her wardrobe, but instead, she embraced it and saw how it elevated her influence. The reality is that leaders are constantly being evaluated, and how they present themselves plays a significant role in their impact. By aligning professional presence with leadership expectations, women can strengthen their effectiveness and open doors for greater opportunities.
