What inspired the launch of Victors in Grad School?

Dr. Chris Lewis created the podcast to fill a gap in the graduate school marketing landscape—offering guidance for prospective grad students through authentic, grassroots storytelling. Drawing on his experience launching a law school podcast, he wanted to provide prospective students with tactical advice and demystify the graduate school experience across disciplines.

How does podcasting support enrollment marketing efforts?

Unlike many traditional tactics, podcasting allows institutions to connect with prospective students earlier in the decision-making journey. Episodes are crafted to address top-of-funnel concerns (e.g., “Should I even go to grad school?”) as well as bottom-of-funnel needs (e.g., financial aid specifics, student services, and program highlights). Dr. Lewis also tailors distribution by sending niche episodes directly to inquiry and applicant segments via CRM and email campaigns.

What metrics matter when measuring podcast success?

Dr. Lewis tracks podcast performance through Libsyn analytics (listens, engagement, popular topics) and CRM metrics (email opens, click-through rates). But he’s more focused on the quality of engagement than raw numbers. “Twenty targeted listens are better than two hundred from the wrong audience,” he says.

How does the podcast fit into broader marketing strategy?

The podcast reinforces UM-Flint’s brand by addressing student anxieties, promoting support resources, and showcasing diverse perspectives. It aligns with the university’s mission to be accessible and student-focused, all while acting as a subtle recruitment engine.

Is podcasting sustainable for higher ed marketers?

Yes—with caveats. You don’t need a massive budget, but you do need a time investment. Dr. Lewis recommends starting with a list of at least 50 topics to ensure you have a long-term content plan. Tools like generative AI and software like Castmagic can help reduce editing and production time. Passion and planning are essential.

How else is Victors in Grad School being used across departments?

Through partnerships with development and alumni relations, the podcast now serves as a tool for alumni engagement and even donor cultivation. This cross-functional collaboration has helped the podcast become a key component of UM-Flint’s integrated marketing strategy.

What’s the secret to long-term podcast success?

Stay curious, keep refining your strategy based on metrics, and remain student-centered in your approach. Dr. Lewis advises would-be podcasters to be intentional about both content and distribution—and to stick with it for the long haul.
